In view of the fact that the territory in
which the Canton-Kowloon Railway is situated has now
been occupied by the Japanese armed forces, I have the honour formally to draw Your Excellency's attention to
the substantial British interest in that railway.

As Your Excellency will be aware, the railway
is divided into Chinese and British sections. In the
former section there is an important British financial
interest consisting of loans aggregating £ 1,233,265.
The British section of the railway is the property of
the Government of Hongkong.

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency
that Japanece troops recently seized one first-class
coach and five waggons, the property of the British
section, and have so fer returned only one waggon.
have accordingly the honour to request that instructiona
may be issued for the return in good order of the
remaining rolling-stock at the earliest possible moment,
I avail myself of this opportunity to rener
to Your Excellency the assurance of my highest
consideration.
